Left-handed pitcher Luis Padron used his
changeup to great effect and was an excellent hitter and a speedy
basestealer (once swiping 21 bases in 43 games). Whenever he wasn't
pitching, he would play 2nd base, 3rd base, or the outfield. He
led the league in hitting in 1902 with a .463 average and averaged
6 home runs a year during the "dead ball" era. "The
Mule" compiled a record of at least 39 wins and 25 losses in
Cuba from 1900 to 1919, and he also played in the Negro leagues
for 18 years. He is considered one of the three best pitchers in
Cuban League history and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in
1943.
