No American Leaguer played more games; Yastrzemski is the only AL player to hit 400 HR and 3,000 hits during his career. Also regarded as an excellent fielder, he led the AL in outfield assists seven consecutive seasons and was selected as a Gold Glove OF in 1963, 1965, 1967, 1968, 1969, 1971, and 1977. The 18th player to be elected to the Hall of Fame on the first ballot, his number 8 was formally retired in 1989.
