Due to its superior farm system, the Cardinals were the class of baseball in 1944, a season that the majors were depleted of much of its talent due to the war. The most notable aspect of the 1944 season was the "Streetcar Series," a World Series that was played entirely at St. Louis' Sportsman's Park. This was the first and only time that the St. Louis Browns won the American League pennant, clinching their league championship on October 1 with a 5-2 victory over the Yankees. |
