"El Caballero" (The Gentleman)
was an all-around outfielder, who often dazzled the fans with
acrobatic catches and hit the ball with great authority. His best
years were from 1928-30 when he won two batting crowns with averages
of .432 and .380. In 1923 he teamed with Oscar
Charleston and Pablo Mesa on the Santa Clara ballclub to form
the greatest outfield in Cuban Winter League history; in fact,
that was a team comparable to the 1927 Yankees since it also included
Jose Mendez, Dobie
Moore, Oliver Marcelle,
Oscar Johnson, and Eustaquin Pedroso.
Oms was enshrined in the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in 1944.
