Mark McGwire

1986 - 2002

1874 games, 583 home runs, .263 batting average

Hitting Ruthian shots high over the outfield walls, McGwire hit the ball out of the park once in every 9.42 at bats, beating out Babe Ruth for the highest home run ratio in major-league history. Hitting 50 or more home runs four seasons in a row (1996-1999), McGwire led Major League Baseball in homers all four seasons. The most spectacular year, of course, was in 1998 when McGwire and Sammy Sosa chased after Roger Maris' single season record and beat it, with McGwire finishing the season at a then record 70 homers. His public admission that he used the supplement androstenedione has led to speculation that he also took steroids--suspicions that also surround Sosa, Barry Bonds, and a number of other modern sluggers.
