New York Yankees All Time Team |
Rich Gossage
1972 - 1994
124 - 107 record, 3.01 ERA, 310 saves
Pitching for 9 different teams, Goose Gossage is best known during his Yankee stint in the late 1970's and early 1980's when they pioneered the set-up/closer configuration which is used by most of the better teams today. Most effective was pairing Ron Davis and Gossage, with Davis typically entering the game in the 7th or 8th innings and Gossage closing. Using that set-up/closing configuration, the Yankees won 77 of 79 games in which they led after 6 innings during one stretch. |
