The first outstanding black pitcher in major league history, "Newk" is also the only baseball player to win the Rookie of the Year (1949), Most Valuable Player (1956), and Cy Young awards during his career. He won the first Cy Young ever awarded in 1956 when he compiled a 27-7 record.
