Lou Brock

1961 - 1979

When MLB went about selecting its All Century Team, The Sporting News (long time based in St. Louis) selected an all time St. Louis Cardinals team--one that would give the all time MLB team a good contest.

The Cardinals challenged the Dodgers for the 1963 title, coming within a game of them in mid September, but the team began slowly in 1964. Until the Cardinals made the fateful deal of trading Ernie Broglio to the Cubs for Lou Brock!

Brock provided the spark to propel the Redbirds to the 1964 World Series and continued to lead them to glory through the decade. The prototype lead-off hitter set MLB single season and career marks for stolen bases (since broken) and he ranks second to Stan Musial for Cardinal records in many categories: games played, runs, hits, total bases, and doubles.
