Ralph Branca
Most famous for tossing the pitch that Bobby Thomson delivered over the left field wall to send Giants fans into delirium in 1951--immortalized as the "shot heard round the world," accompanied with Russ Hodges frenzied "The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!" Branca had had some success previously, winning 21 games in 1947. Before that 1951 playoff, Branca laughed at superstitions--wearing number 13 and posing with black cats. But that only gave credence to these superstitions, and Branca only won 12 more games after that fateful day. |
